Kennedy Center children's theatre to performWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Kennedy Center Imagination Celebration on Tour will offer two performances of "Tales of a Fourth-Grade Nothing" at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, in Loeb Playhouse in Stewart Center at Purdue University.Presented by Purdue Convocations and Lectures as part of its arts education programming, these children's theatre performances already are sold out to Lafayette-area schoolchildren. Judy Blume's best-selling book about the adventures of 9-year-old Peter Hatcher and his kid brother, Fudge, was adapted for the stage by Bruce Mason. The original production premiered at the Kennedy Center in 1996, directed by Kathleen Dimmick. Now on a 43-city tour, the one-hour play stars professional adult actors in all of the roles. Arts education programming is an ongoing commitment for Purdue Convocations. "We feel arts education is very important, not only in the complete education of the whole child, but also in the building of new audiences for the arts in the future," Director Lorna Myers said. "The Kennedy Center children's theatre is such a valuable resource for our local schoolchildren and their teachers. They offer the highest-quality productions, accompanied by comprehensive educational materials to ensure the experience has long-reaching impact. They simply reach out and show young people the magic of theater." The Kennedy Center's Imagination Celebration on Tour program grew out of a perceived need to offer high-quality theater for young people and families accompanied by a comprehensive educational packet in communities across the nation. A professional development workshop for teachers often is presented several weeks before the performance. In this case, 13 Lafayette-area teachers received hands-on experiences in exploring curriculum concepts related to the production, preparing students for the performance, and using the arts as an integral part of the curriculum. An in-depth study guide also is supplied to teachers for use in their classrooms.
