Black Voices of Inspiration presents free concert Nov. 5

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Black Voices of Inspiration will perform its fall campus concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, in the Purdue Memorial Union Ballrooms.

The free concert is part of the Black Cultural Center's 1998 Cultural Arts Series. It is co-sponsored by the Student Union Board.

Established in 1975, the Black Voices of Inspiration is committed to the performance of the music of African-Americans. Its repertoire consists of traditional Negro spirituals, contemporary gospel music and popular songs of inspiration. The choir is one of four performing arts ensembles associated with the BCC.

The choir's objective is to reinforce a positive sense of cultural identity and self worth, providing its members and its audience with an outlet for spiritual and educational fulfillment. The members, ranging from freshmen to graduate students, represent various academic disciplines.

The award-winning choir has toured extensively throughout Indiana, visiting other university campuses, metropolitan churches, civic organizations and elementary schools. The choir sang the national anthem at the Indianapolis Colts football game Oct. 4 -- the only winning game for the Colts so far this year.

Artist-in-residence Marshall White directs the choir. He is a professional vocal trainer and music consultant with more than 20 years of choral experience. In addition to his involvement with the Black Voices of Inspiration, White has worked with several major recording artists including Clifton Davis, Sandi Patti, Michael Bolton, Barry Manilow and Richard Smallwood.
