Purdue to participate in alcohol awareness weekWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University is among the 3,000 colleges and universities that will participate in National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, Oct. 17-24.Activities begin with the Jay Severson Memorial Walk/Run at 8 a.m. Saturday (10/17) at Wiley Residence Hall. The event raises money for alcohol and other drug education programs on campus. Severson, a graduate student and hall counselor from Fair Oaks, was shot and killed by another student at Wiley Hall in October 1996. Other events during the week include a demonstration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday (10/21) on the Engineering Mall of vision goggles that simulate what the wearer would see while intoxicated; and a candlelight walk starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Windsor Halls to remember people hurt or killed in alcohol-related accidents. Greeks Advocating the Mature Management of Alcohol will offer a sober driver program on Thursday and Friday evenings. Health Promotion Programs is making Alcohol 101, an interactive computer presentation, available to fraternities, sororities, cooperative houses and residence halls throughout the week. The activities are sponsored by Health Promotion Programs, the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Association, Purdue Residence Halls, Purdue Student Government and Greeks Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol.
