'Big,' the Broadway musical, will play Elliott on Nov. 8WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The new Broadway musical "Big" will play Purdue University's Elliott Hall of Music for one performance only at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8.The musical is presented by Purdue Convocations and Lectures as part of the Lively Arts Package and is supported in part by Insight Communications and Lafayette Savings Bank. This newly staged adaptation of the hit film, which starred Tom Hanks, tells the story of 12-year-old Josh Baskin, who wants to grow up fast. After being turned away from a carnival ride for being too small, Josh encounters an arcade game/genie named Zoltar and impulsively wishes to be "big." His wish is granted, and he suddenly finds himself trapped in a "grown-up" body. "Big" is the result of a collaboration of Richard Maltby Jr. (lyrics), David Shire (music) and John Weidman (book). After a Broadway run that elicited mixed reviews, the musical was retooled in a major way, yielding a successful touring production that has been described as "a new, family-friendly show" by Newsweek magazine. Variety, the entertainment industry's authority, stated that "with hummable melodies, delightful performances and heartfelt human connections, this new version of 'Big' is a welcome revelation." Tickets to the Nov. 8 performance are $28, $24 and $14 for the public, and $18 or $14 for Purdue students. Charge by phone at (765) 494-3933 or 1-800-914-SHOW.
