JOURNALISTS: Here's a story idea and Purdue events during the next two weeks.
Student patrols play bigger role in campus safetyThe Purdue Police Department is on the lookout for a few good students. When the first Purdue Student Security Patrol was formed in 1987, the main mission of the eight student patrolmen was to be highly visible in areas where assaults might occur -- in parking garages and parking lots. However, the present force of 36 students soon will be expanding to 44 men and women. The need for increasing the ranks comes because of the group's expanding responsibilities. The students now operate a late-night safety escort service, they check the working order of the campus boulevard lights and 214 emergency telephones, and they even write parking tickets.
