Beef Evaluation Program's bull sale to be Oct. 22

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Beef producers looking to enhance the genetics of their herd will want to mark their calendars for Thursday (10/22), the date of the 42nd Indiana Beef Evaluation Program Bull Sale.

The sale will feature 46 bulls: 28 Angus, 10 Simmental, three Chiangus, two Hereford, two Limousin, and one Charolais.

"All of the bulls in the sale are of very high quality," said Kern Hendrix, Purdue University animal scientist. "To be eligible for the sale, each bull had to rank in the top two-thirds of the bulls in their breed in a performance index, which included both daily gain and weight per day of age."

Each sale bull also has passed examinations for structural soundness, disposition and breeding soundness, Hendrix said. In addition, all bulls have been measured by real-time ultrasound for rib-eye area, backfat and marbling.

"This is an excellent opportunity for producers to select a bull for which a great deal of information in available from which to make decisions to help improve the genetics in their herd," Hendrix said. The bulls range in age from 12 to 18 months.

The sale will begin at 6:30 p.m. EST at the Springville Feeder Auction, 10 miles northwest of Bedford on Indiana 54/58.

The animals will be available for viewing before the sale at the bull test station at the Feldun Purdue Agricultural Center, 3 miles northwest of Bedford on Indiana 158 and 458.
