Oct. 24: Food Science Building Dedication An alumni day dedication ceremony is planned for the new Food Science Building on Purdue's West Lafayette campus. Food science and School of Agriculture alumni will have the opportunity to view the facility, with a reception at 9:30 a.m., welcoming remarks at 10 a.m., and tours at 10:15 a.m. The building is part of the $38.5 million Food Science/Biotechnology Complex. Housing laboratories, classrooms and offices for faculty and staff, the new building is just west of the Horticulture Building. Parking is available in the Marsteller Street Garage. Oct. 28-29: Tree And Log Grading Workshop Indiana's Society of American Foresters and Purdue University's Department of Forestry and Natural Resources are sponsoring this workshop at Depauw University in Greencastle to improve tree and log grading and identification skills. Daniel Cassens, Purdue Extension wood products specialist, will be the instructor for the program which begins at 8 a.m. Oct. 28 and concludes at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 29. Transportation from the university to the woods or mill will not be provided. Registration is $48 for each participant, which includes two lunches and handout material. Oct. 29: Our Food System In The 21st Century The Office of Academic Programs in Purdue's School of Agriculture is sponsoring this symposium for high-school teachers of economics, business and social studies. The program will give them a better understanding of the economic forces that will shape the future of the food industry and ways to stimulate student interest in the industry. Teachers also will participate in hands-on demonstrations using the World Wide Web as an economics teaching tool and will tour the new food science complex. Oct. 29-30: Science Teachers Symposium This symposium will show high-school science teachers innovative ways to educate students about food sciences. The event, sponsored by Purdue's School of Agriculture, will feature several Purdue food scientists who will tackle topics such as food-borne illnesses, meat biochemistry, food freezing and more. Teachers also will take home classroom materials and lessons plans. The two-day event begins at 9 a.m. Oct. 29 in the Whistler Hall of Agricultural Research and ends at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 30. The Office of Academic Programs will provide lunches and pay hotel costs for each teacher. Expenses for spouses are not covered. Nov. 17-19: Cooperative Extension Service Conference Cooperative Extension Service staff will gather on campus to discuss the future of CES and to honor outstanding members. Scheduled for Nov. 17 are committee meetings, breakout sessions, and a staff information fair. The evening will begin with a retiree's reception at 5:15 and a staff banquet and awards program at 6 p.m. Nov. 18 will feature a series of programs on state and county plans of work, individual action plans and accountability. At 2:30 p.m., the deans from the Schools of Agriculture, Consumer and Family Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine will discuss what they expect from CES as a result of the plans. The final day of the conference will have a new Extension staff breakfast along with Extension educators board meetings and committee meetings. Nov. 18; Dec. 2 And 8: Agricultural Tax Workshops Purdue University, Indiana District Internal Revenue Service and Indiana Department of Revenue are sponsoring three half-day agricultural tax workshops. Dates and locations are:
Nov. 18: Fort Wayne Holiday Inn North West. Purdue agricultural economist George Patrick will lead in-depth discussions of farm and agricultural tax problems such as marketing arrangements and tax treatment, soil and water conservation expenditures, and farm leases and tax treatment. The program begins at 8:30 a.m. and adjourns at 12:30 p.m. Registration costs are $70 if already enrolled in an income tax school (11 of them will be conducted around the state from Nov. 4 through Dec. 4) or $110 if not.
