Appointments and promotions-- Carol Barrett has accepted an appointment as interim director of Purdue University's Center for Career Opportunities. Barrett, who has been with the office since 1973, will become interim director at the end of January when Richard Stewart retires as director. Barrett will oversee the office while a national search is conducted for a new permanent director. Barrett has been responsible for the internal daily operations of the office that helps about 4,000 students each year find employment.

Faculty and staff honors-- Barbara G. Doster has received the National Academic Advising Association's "Outstanding Advisor" award for 1998. Doster, an adviser in the School of Management, was recognized for her leadership, caring attitude toward students and student success rate, among other criteria. Doster received a plaque, a one-year membership in the National Academic Advising Association, and free registration to the 1998 national conference.-- Jon Haveman, assistant professor of management, has received Superior Honor Awards from both the U.S. Department of State and the Department of Transportation. Haveman, an economist, spent the 1997-98 academic year in Washington, D.C., as a senior economic adviser to President Clinton. The awards were given for his work in the U.S.-Japan Civil Aviation Agreement in which Haveman and his colleagues from the two departments negotiated more landing sites in Japan for U.S. commercial air carriers. * * * * *
Campus activities-- The Tenth Annual Purdue Conference on Romance Languages, Literatures and Film will draw about 150 international scholars to campus Oct. 15-17. The events, mostly in Stewart Center, are free to Purdue students and staff. Highlights: The School of Liberal Arts Dean's Lecture by Millicent Marcus, the Mariano DiVito Professor of Italian Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, will be at 5:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, in the Anniversary Drawing Room of the Purdue Memorial Union. The keynote address will be given by Floyd Merrell, Purdue professor of Spanish, at 5:45 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, in the West Faculty Lounge of the Purdue Memorial Union. The conference is sponsored by the School of Liberal Arts, Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, and the Programs in Comparative Literature, Italian Studies, Film Studies, Jewish Studies, Medieval Studies and Women's Studies.-- Mademoiselle magazine's Hot Life-O-Matic Campus Tour will be at the Purdue Memorial Mall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 15 and 16. The event will feature a Wellness Tent where students can get up-to-date health information and a display by JobDirect.com, the country's leading on-line employment service. A full runway fashion show featuring Purdue students will start at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 16. Health Promotion Programs is coordinating the Purdue stop of the 20-campus tour.
