JOURNALISTS: Here's a story idea and Purdue events during the next two weeks.
Balkan expert returns to area of turmoilA Purdue University history professor will return to the former Yugoslavia during a three-week trip starting Oct. 19. Charles Ingrao, an expert on the region, will interview high government and international officials in Bosnia, Montenegro, Kosovo and Macedonia. Ingrao doesn't anticipate dodging U.S. bombs during his trek. "Yugoslavian President Slobodan Milosevic is quite adept at making just enough concessions to prevent the United States and its European allies from reaching a consensus on military action," he says. However, Ingrao does expect the United States to get its allies to adopt a "zero tolerance" policy, with any further significant bloodshed opening the way for air strikes. This is Ingrao's sixth trip to the region since 1996. He is gathering information for a book on the rise and fall of the region's multiethnic societies. CONTACT: Ingrao, (765) 463-9658 (before Oct. 19 or after Nov. 9).
