Chilean ensemble to play baroque, folk music at PurdueWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Chilean music ensemble Barroco Andino will perform a unique blend of classical and traditional music at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, in Loeb Playhouse in Stewart Center.A part of the Patrons' Choice Series presented by Purdue Convocations, this concert is supported by the Heartland Arts Fund and Eli Lilly & Co., where the ensemble will give a brief lunchtime performance for Lilly employees on Wednesday, Oct. 28. Barroco Andino consists of 10 artists who fuse classical European music with the folkloric expressions of Latin American cultures. They perform the works of baroque composers such as Bach and Vivaldi as well as 19th and 20th century composers including Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev on South American folk instruments such as the quena, zampona, and tiple. Guitar, mandolin, flute and clarinet also are brought into the instrumental mix. In addition to a classical repertoire, Barroco Andino also features contemporary compositions by director Jaime Soto Leon based on the works of Chile's two Nobel Prize-winning poets, Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda, as well as Spain's Federico Garcia Lorca. In addition to successful recordings, Barroco Andino has toured extensively including performances in Italy, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and Holland. The group has appeared in the Weil Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Osaka Symphony Hall in Japan. In 1996, it was invited to represent Chile and Latin America at the International Music Festival of Taipei in Taiwan.
Tickets to the Oct. 29 performance are $16 for the public and $11 for Purdue students
at campus box offices. A special discounted price of $7 is offered to Purdue Spanish
