Sights, sounds and colors of science featured Oct. 17WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Physics and chemistry will come alive in two separate shows to be held Saturday, Oct. 17 at Purdue University. The demonstrations are aimed at children and adults of all ages and are free and open to the public. The physics show will be held at 10 a.m. and the chemistry show begins 11 a.m. Purdue's Department of Physics will hold its annual Physics FunFest in Purdue's Elliott Hall of Music. The show will include demonstrations of gravitation, light, sonic lenses, waves in sight and sound, and a chain that can climb walls. The physics show also will feature the Flying Bernoulli Brothers, two physics teachers from Ohio who have performed across the country and who engage the audience in their demonstrations. Additional information on the show may be obtained by contacting Dennis Harp, physics outreach coordinator, at (765) 494-0740, or by sending e-mail to harp@physics.purdue.edu Purdue's Department of Chemistry will explore "The Color of Chemistry" in a show at 11 a.m. in Room 200 of Wetherill Laboratory of Chemistry, located directly north of Stewart Center. The chemistry show will include a wide range of color-producing chemical reactions, including reactions that fluctuate between colors and some that also produce light. All children attending the chemistry show will receive a take-home chemistry kit that demonstrates colors and light, according to Paul Smith, director of chemistry lecture demonstrations and director of the show.
