International speaker headlines 'Focus on Teaching'

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The keynote speaker for this year's Focus on Teaching Lecture Series will be Karen Symms Gallagher, dean of the School of Education at the University of Kansas. She will speak at the recognition program for Teaching Academy inductees at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 20, in Fowler Hall, Stewart Center.

The Focus on Teaching lectures, free and open to the public, are dedicated to improving teaching and learning at Purdue. The series is sponsored by the Office of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Gallagher will discuss learning assessment and share perspectives on the goals, definitions and measurements of teaching effectiveness. Before taking her post at the University of Kansas, Gallagher was associate dean for academic affairs and professor of educational administration at the University of Cincinnati. She also served as senior policy consultant and staff director of the Ohio General Assembly Commission on Education Improvement.

Her international presentations have included a keynote address at the Second China-U.S. Conference on Education in Beijing, China, and a presentation to the World Assembly of the International Council on Education for Teaching, Lagos, Nigeria.

The lecture series also includes presentations from award-winning Purdue faculty members who will share their experiences and insights and offer creative approaches to teaching. Each speaker will pose a set of ideas or questions designed to stimulate discussion among participants.

Those "Conversations About Teaching" will be at 3:30 p.m. in the East and West Faculty Lounges in the Memorial Union. The dates and presenters are:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 6. Gerald Krockover, professor of earth and atmospheric science education who has received 14 national, state and local awards for outstanding teaching.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 24. Fred Lytle, professor of chemistry and the 1996 Indiana Professor of the Year.
  • Wednesday, Jan. 20. Nick Rauh, associate professor of history who in 1997 was named one of Purdue's five outstanding undergraduate teachers.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 17. David Moore, the Shanti S. Gupta Distinguished Professor of Statistics who has received both Purdue and national awards for teaching excellence.
  • Wednesday, March 24. Jay Akridge, professor of agricultural economics who has led workshops in Central and Eastern Europe and South America on agribusiness management education.
