'The Inside' begins BCC Cultural Arts SeriesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue University Black Cultural Center will begin its 1998 Cultural Arts Series at 7 p.m. Wednesday (9/30), in Fowler Hall, Stewart Center, with the critically acclaimed play "The Inside."The free performance is produced by the Ma'at Production Association of African Centered Theatre, a multi-disciplined arts organization dedicated to producing original works by emerging artists. Based in Chicago, the group has built a reputation for innovation and excellence. The production style has been labeled Afrikan Centered Theatre. "This play is a piercing take on race, academia, art and sexuality. It's a deeply engaging exploration of personal identity," BCC Director Renee Thomas said. "The Inside" is about Emma, a black student from Mississippi at an East Coast college who reaches a crisis at a party given by and populated with her white peers.
In addition to the play, members of the ensemble will conduct a class on Afrikan Storytelling
at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Black Cultural Center multipurpose room. Participants
will create, refine and perform works of original storytelling.
