Campus activities

-- "The Face of Breast Cancer, a Photographic Essay," will be on display in the main lobby of the Recreational Sports Center from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 5-7. The traveling exhibit of photographs of survivors and victims of breast cancer also will be displayed during the School of Pharmacy's Over-the-Counter Drug Fair on Oct. 21 in the North Ballroom, Purdue Memorial Union. The display is sponsored by Health Promotion Programs, Kappa Epsilon pharmacy fraternity, American Cancer Society, Purdue Employee Wellness Program, YWCA EncorePlus Program and the Purdue Women's Clinic as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Faculty and staff honors

-- Purdue's Women in Engineering Program has been selected to receive the 1998 Maria Mitchell Women in Science Award. The award honors individuals or organizations that encourage girls and women to pursue careers in science and technology. It commemorates Mitchell, America's first professional woman astronomer and astronomy professor. Funded by the William R. Kenan Jr. Fund for Engineering, Science and Technology, and presented by the Maria Mitchell Association, this is the first year the award was determined by jury. The $5,000 award will be presented Oct. 3 in Nantucket, Mass.

-- Raymond Cohen, the Herrick Professor of Engineering, has received a lifetime achievement award in honor of his leadership in the development of compressor technology and refrigeration systems, and in the development of international conferences on compressor and refrigeration technology. He received the honor from the organizers of the Biennial International Compressor Engineering Conference and the International Refrigeration Conference, both of which have been held at Purdue since 1972 and 1986, respectively. This summer, Cohen also received a Presidential Citation of Honor from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers for his contribution as the founder and first editor of the society's International Journal of Heating, Ventilating, Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Research.
