Sept. 19 And 24; Oct. 24: Food Science Dedications
Three dedication ceremonies are planned for the new Food Science Building on Purdue's
West Lafayette campus. The building is part of the ongoing $38.5 million Food Science/Biotechnology
Complex. Housing laboratories, classrooms and offices for faculty and staff, the new building is just west of the Horticulture Building. Parking is available

Sept. 19, Parent's Day
: A reception will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the building's lobby. Department Head
Phil Nelson will offer welcoming remarks to parents of food science students at
10 a.m.; building tours begin at 10:15 a.m.
Sept. 24, State Day
: The building will be on display for legislators and state government officials
who have supported the project. Ceremonies will begin at 1:30 p.m. with remarks by
Nelson, Dean of the School of Agriculture Dean Lechtenberg, President Steven Beering
and Lt. Gov. Joseph Kernan. Tours will begin at 2:15 p.m.
Oct. 24, Alumni Day
: During Homecoming Weekend, food science and School of Agriculture alumni will
have the opportunity to view the facility, with a reception at 9:30 a.m., welcoming
remarks at 10 a.m., and tours at 10:15 a.m.
Sept. 20: Morgan County Farm Fest
A free afternoon of family activities, Farm Fest will include a tour of five Morgan
County agricultural facilities highlighting various aspects of farming. Farm Fest
will be from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and is sponsored by seven organizations, including
the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service in Morgan County. Tour stops are the Morgan County
fairgrounds, Valley Farms, Anderson Orchard, Ozark Fisheries and the McCarty Beef
Farm. Directions are available from the Morgan County Cooperative Extension Service

Sept. 28-30: Destination: The Future
Indiana adults and youths are invited to this workshop at McCormick's Creek State
Park near Spencer to combat teen-age impaired driving. Workshop topics include teen
impaired driving issues, and a look at laws, testing and juvenile diversion programs.
Sessions will look at examples of adults and youths working together to combat teen-impaired
driving and ways to motivate communities to work together. Sponsored by the Purdue
University 4-H Youth Department, the Community Systemwide Response (CSR) initiative, and the Governor's Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving, CSR sites may send
five- to 10-member teams of adults and youths; non-CSR site teams will be considered
if space is available. Registration, materials, room and meals are covered by a grant
from the Indiana Governor's Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving. CONTACT: Pam Robbins,

Sept. 29- Oct. 1: Farm Progress Show
One of the largest farm shows in the country with 600 vendors, the Farm Progress Show
is an 80-acre tent city that suddenly appears each year in the middle of Midwest
farm fields. An estimated 300,000 to 350,000 visitors will travel to Tipton County
for the three-day event near Windfall. Gates will open at 7:30 a.m. each day and will close
promptly at 5 p.m. Admission is $5 per person, with persons under the age of 18 admitted
free. The show is organized by the Farm Progress Cos. and rotates between Indiana, Illinois and Iowa. The Purdue presence will include an animals sciences tent, a
mock house, agricultural production and research exhibits, and for the first time,

Oct. 6: Pumpkin Twilight Meeting (Date Changed From Sept. 22)
This meeting gives growers, gardeners, seed company staff and others interested in
pumpkins the opportunity to view a wide array of pumpkin varieties grown in Purdue's
1998 trials. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Purdue's Throckmorton Farm just
south of Lafayette at 8345 Indiana 43 South. Purdue Extension vegetable specialists will
be on hand to provide updates on the pumpkin season and to answer questions. In addition,
participants will see first-hand the new vegetable and research farm. Refreshments will be provided, and preregistration is not necessary. The meeting is free. CONTACT:
