Sept. 9: Pinney Purdue Ag Center Field day Focusing on the 1998 crop and crop problems, this free field day will show participants how to manage challenges and improve profitability of their farming operation. Topics will include herbicides and weed control, corn and soybean growth and development, soybean cyst nematodes, combine adjustments and harvest losses, and plant disease and diagnostics. Participants will receive a free copy of Purdue's "Corn and Soybean Field Guide." Registration begins at 9 a.m., with presentations from 10:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. The day includes a free lunch. The Pinney Purdue Ag Center is 5 miles east of Valparaiso off U.S. 30, north 5 miles on County Line Road. Sept. 9: Steps To Exporting Success Teleconference The Purdue and Iowa Cooperative Extension services, with the Indiana and U.S. departments of commerce and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, are co-sponsoring this two-hour teleconference for businesses that want to improve or start export sales. Participants will learn about marketing value-added products abroad and what foreign buyers look for from U.S. suppliers. "Steps to Exporting Success" will run from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hamilton County Extension Office, 2003 E. Pleasant St., Noblesville. After the program, a panel of agency staff will talk about what resources are available to Indiana businesses. The program is free, but preregistration is encouraged. Sept. 9, 10: Risk Management: Frontier Workshops These workshops, designed for lenders, brokers, elevator operators and others who work with agricultural producers, will provide an introduction to the risks faced by farmers in areas such as production, marketing, financial, legal and human resources. They will provide an overview of risk-management tools and effective risk-management strategies. Workshops will last from 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Registration includes lunch and is $45. Sept. 10: In-Field Diagnostic Training Clinic This the last in a series of in-field diagnostic training clinics presented throughout the summer by the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service. The clinics aim to improve farmers' troubleshooting skills and field crop management by presenting specific and timely information and examples. Topics include insect management, disease management and soil compaction management. Preregistration is required, and clinics are limited to 60 people. Registration is $90. The final clinic will be Sept. 10 at the Agronomy Research Center, 4540 U.S. 52 W., West Lafayette. Sept. 12: Beyond Corn And Beans -- Alternative Farming This free, day-long workshop, sponsored by the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service and Farm Bureau Inc. in Sullivan County, begins at 8:30 a.m. at the fairgrounds in Sullivan. Purdue specialists and educators, area farmers and Indiana University biology professors will cover mushroom farming, aquaculture, beekeeping, herbs, raising swine on pasture, crop marketing and other niche agriculture topics. Sept. 20: Morgan County farm fest A free afternoon of family activities for all ages, Farm Fest will include a tour of five Morgan County agricultural facilities highlighting various aspects of farming. Farm Fest will be from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and is sponsored by the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service in Morgan County, SCI REMC, Morgan County Farm Bureau, Morgan County Pork Producers, Morgan County Antique Machinery Association, Morgan County Beef Cattle Association and Morgan County Soil and Water District. Tour stops are the Morgan County fairgrounds, Valley Farms, Anderson Orchard, Ozark Fisheries and the McCarty Beef Farm. Sept. 22: Pumpkin Twilight meeting The Pumpkin Twilight Meeting gives growers, gardeners, seed company staff and others interested in pumpkins the opportunity to view a wide array of pumpkin varieties grown in Purdue's 1998 trials. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Purdue's Throckmorton farm just south of Lafayette at 8345 Indiana 43 South. Purdue Extension vegetable specialists will be on hand to provide updates on the pumpkin season and to answer questions. In addition, participants will see first-hand the new vegetable and research farm. Refreshments will be provided, and preregistration is not necessary. The meeting is free and open to the public.
