Purdue offers workshop about impaired teen drivingWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Indiana adults and youths are invited to work together to combat teen-age impaired driving by participating in a workshop Sept. 28-30 at McCormick's Creek State Park near Spencer. The percentage of traffic fatalities caused by drunken driving dropped to a record low in 1997, but still made up 38.6 percent of automobile deaths, according to figures just released by the Department of Transportation. There were 16,189 alcohol-related traffic deaths in 1997. Workshop topics include an update on teen impaired driving issues, a look at laws, testing, and juvenile diversion programs. Sessions also will look at examples of adults and youths working together to combat teen impaired driving as well as ways to motivate communities to work together to address teen impaired driving issues. The event is sponsored by the Purdue University 4-H Youth Department, the Community Systemwide Response (CSR) initiative, and the Governor's Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving. Indiana Community Systemwide Response is an initiative that partners county Cooperative Extension Service educators with their juvenile court judge or prosecutor. The idea is to steer troubled youngsters into Extension programs that might help them and to develop a communitywide plan for dealing with problems associated with teen-agers. CSR sites may send five- to 10-member teams of adults and youths. Preregistration is due by Sept. 10. Non-CSR site teams will be considered if space is available.
Registration, materials, room and meals are covered by a grant from the Indiana Governor's
Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving.
