Everyone feels the ups and downs of the Dow

If the stock market continues it's recent roller coaster ride, consumers could soon begin to feel the effects, says a Purdue University economics expert. Gerald Lynch, associate professor of economics at Purdue, says that when the stock market drops hundreds of points in a day, like it has recently, consumer spending and consumption fall off due to what's called the "wealth effect." "Simply put, that means that stockholders will begin to reign in spending and concentrate on saving because they have less wealth," he says. "For those who don't own stock, the results aren't as immediate; however, it can eventually lessen the demand for production of goods and increase the prices of consumer goods and services."
