JOURNALISTS: Here 's a story idea and a list of Purdue events during the next two weeks.
Purdue provides tools for high-tech collaborationsEngineers in industry are used to working in teams and sharing high-tech information. But what if your team members are in different cities or countries? What if a project involves teams at more than one company? How can companies solve last-minute problems in a timely, cost-effective way? James Solberg, director of Purdue's Center for Collaborative Manufacturing, says such collaborative arrangements are becoming an increasingly necessary means of meeting the needs of manufacturers. Videoconferencing, meetings on the Internet, immediate access to computer-generated design changes from colleagues half-way around the world -- these are some of the newest tools that Purdue engineering students are learning to use in preparation for entering the work force. At 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5 , in Room 1332 in the Michael Golden Laboratories and Shops, a group of students will demonstrate how high-tech industrial collaboration works by staging mock scenarios, including one involving an American company working with an electrical power plant in China. CONTACTS: Solberg or Nancy Bulger, admistrative director, (765) 494-7715.
