Repairs return some air conditioning to Purdue campusWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- A broken steam throttle valve on the largest of four chiller units at the Purdue University Wade Utility Plant, which failed early Friday (7/24), has been repaired, meaning that some air conditioning will be restored to campus for the weekend.Joseph L. Bennett, vice president for university relations, said the 6,000-ton chiller was back on-line and running by about 7:30 p.m. Friday after most of the campus was without air conditioning during the day on Friday. On Tuesday (7/21), the turbine drive on the second largest of the four chiller units apparently threw a blade, which had significantly reduced air-conditioning capacity for the campus this week. Joseph D. Mikesell, director of utilities, said the chiller that went down earlier in the week, a 4,500-ton unit, is expected to be repaired by Wednesday (7/29).
