JOURNALISTS: Here is an idea about an upcoming news story and a list of Purdue events during the next two weeks.
CARe educates youth about sexual assaultThis 4-H Youth project isn't winning blue ribbons -- but maybe it should. The Communities Against Rape Initiative, or CARe, is increasing young people's knowledge about what constitutes sexual assault and how to prevent it through age-appropriate, in- school and out-of-school educational programs. Purdue's 4-H Youth program is coordinating the CARe initiative in collaboration with other state entities. "So many young people don't realize that a person who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs is legally unable to consent to sex," says Sue Hancock, extension specialist and CARe coordinator. Under the direction of Mary Pilat, assistant professor of 4-H Youth, CARe funds eight college and university initiatives and 30 community grants in nearly 40 Indiana counties, supporting programs that work to reduce incidents of rape and sexual assault. A curriculum for 7th to 9th grade students is being tested this summer, with revisions being added for 10th to 12th grade students. A curriculum also will be developed for 5th to 6th graders.
