JOURNALISTS: Here 's a story idea and Purdue events during the next two weeks.

Expert: Different sport, similar issues

Professional sports history may repeat itself, according to a Purdue expert on collective bargaining. "This time around it's basketball players and team owners instead of baseball," says James Dworkin, associate dean of the Krannert School of Management and author of "Owners vs. Players: Baseball and Collective Bargaining." Dworkin, an expert on professional sports unions and arbitration, says the National Basketball Association's player/owner standoff over a proposed salary cap is reminiscent of the baseball lockout of the early 1990s. The current NBA collective bargaining contract runs out June 30. The owners are pushing for a $9 million cap for players' salaries, but the union is adamant that teams be able to sign free agents without regard to the cap.
