English and Steffy leaving IPFW for Iowa State

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Fenwick W. English, vice chancellor for academic affairs at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, and his wife, Betty E. Steffy, dean of the School of Education, will leave IPFW to accept positions in the College of Education at Iowa State University. They are expected to assume their new duties Aug. 1.

"Our leaving was a quality-of-life decision," English said. "We are both near the end of our careers in educational administration, and we wanted to return to teaching and research at a doctoral-granting institution. It was important for both of us to go to the same place. This was a critical factor for us in determining whether or not to accept the positions at ISU."

English came to IPFW in July 1995 as dean of the School of Education. Steffy joined the faculty as a part-time professor, with part of her time being devoted to a joint appointment with Fort Wayne Community Schools as director of program evaluation. Steffy was responsible for helping the system evaluate programs and pioneer joint initiatives and shared resources. When English became vice chancellor for academic affairs in 1996, Steffy stepped in as dean of the School of Education while retaining her ties with Fort Wayne Community Schools, which paid the university for her time. The partnership will continue after Steffy's departure.

"A thorough assessment of programs is the only way to pinpoint ways to make effective improvements," said Thomas Fowler-Finn, superintendent of Fort Wayne Community Schools.

"Since Dr. Steffy took over as director of program evaluation nearly three years ago, that's what we've been able to do. We have been well-served by the direction the district has taken in areas such as alternative education and middle school education thanks to Dr. Steffy's work."

Chancellor Michael A. Wartell noted that the resignations are a significant loss to IPFW and the Fort Wayne educational community. "English and Steffy are acknowledged leaders in their fields, and they are important assets to IPFW and Fort Wayne Community Schools," Wartell said. "Their service to IPFW has been outstanding. They will be greatly missed."

English and Steffy are nationally known writers and speakers in education, having written or co-authored 15 book between them, as well as numerous scholarly papers and articles. They were formerly faculty members in the College of Education at the University of Kentucky. and Steffy was deputy superintendent of instruction in the Kentucky Department of Education.

"IPFW is a growing university," English said. "It has been gratifying to work with some of the best faculty in the country, as well as outstanding administrative and clerical staff. IPFW is a quality university, and I feel fortunate to have been a part of it. IPFW is fortunate to have the visionary leadership of Chancellor Wartell. It has been gratifying to work with someone of his stature and energy."

Added Steffy: "We are both grateful to the IPFW administration for the continued support we have received while at IPFW."
