Appointments and promotions

-- Richard F. Borch, head of Purdue's Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, has been named director of Purdue's Cancer Center. He succeeds William Baird, who resigned in October to take a job at Oregon State University. Borch, who is the Lilly Distinguished Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, joined the Purdue faculty in October and has served as interim director of the Cancer Center since then. Before coming to Purdue, he was director of the University of Rochester Cancer Center. His research focuses on the development of new drugs for the treatment of cancer.

Campus activities:

-- A summer schedule is in place for the John Purdue Room Jr., a smaller version of the normal John Purdue Room operated by students in the Department of Restaurant, Hotel, Institutional and Tourism Management. On Mondays and Wednesdays from June 22 to Aug. 3, the John Purdue Room Jr. will be operated in the RHIT Cafe in Stone Hall. The John Purdue Room Jr. will feature full-service dining, with reservations available from 11 a.m. to noon. Call (765) 494-6845 to make reservations.

Alumni honors:

-- Four distinguished alumni of the School of Materials Engineering have received the school's 1998 Outstanding Materials Engineer Award. The award recognizes the accomplishments of young alumni who have demonstrated excellence in the field of materials engineering and who have provided significant service to the school. The 1998 recipients are:

  • Steven E. Ferdon, materials engineering functional excellence leader, Cummins Engine Co., Columbus , Ind .,who received his bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering in 1982.
  • James L. Karl, memory products solutions manager, IBM Microelectronics Division, Burlington, Vt., who received his bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering in 1981.
  • Tresa M. Pollock, assistant professor, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, who received her bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering in 1984.
  • V.G. Veeraraghavan, manager of components engineering, Lexmark International, Lexington, Ky., who received a master's degree in 1973 and a doctorate in 1976, both in materials engineering.
