June: Indiana Wine and Grape Month

Wineries and vineyards from Lake Michigan to the Ohio River will hold special activities all month to recognize Gov. June 24: In-field diagnostic Training Clinic

The Purdue Cooperative Extension Service is presenting a series of in-field diagnostic training clinics throughout the summer. The clinics are designed to improve farmers' troubleshooting skills and field crop management. Topics such as insect management, disease management and soil compaction management will be featured. The clinics are broken up into early, middle and late seasons to present specific and timely information and examples. Preregistration is required, and clinics are limited to 60 people. Registration is $90 at the West Lafayette location and $50 at the Columbia City location. Clinics dates and locations are:

  • June 24: Northeast Purdue Agricultural Center, Columbia City.
  • July 21: Agronomy Center, West Lafayette.
  • July 23: Agronomy Center, West Lafayette.
  • Sept. 10: Agronomy Center, West Lafayette.

June 25: Purdue Hay Day

This annual, one-day Purdue Cooperative Extension Service event at Prairie Heights School Farm off of U.S. 20 in Lagrange County will feature morning sessions on topics such as precision agriculture and balancing yield, quality and persistence in forage production. Lunch will be followed by a panel discussion on potato leafhopper-resistant alfalfa. Equipment demonstrations by more than 13 companies will be held in the afternoon. A hay quality contest will be held, and producers can have their hay and silage samples evaluated by Purdue specialists. The free field day is co-sponsored by the Indiana Forage Council. June 29-30 Eastern Midwest Climate Change Conference

The Eastern Midwest Climate Change Workshop is intended for Midwestern agricultural producers and business leaders who want to learn more about how climate change and government policies may affect their industries. Following a morning of seminars on scientific consensus on climate change and industry perspectives, participants will divide into work groups on livestock, crops and agricultural inputs; electricity, coal and steel; and manufacturing and construction. The workshop will be at the University Place Conference Center, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. June 29-July 1: 4-H Roundup

"The Power of 4-H" is the theme for this year's Roundup. It will feature fun and learning with all activities focusing on how to have respect for yourself and others as you strive to be your personal best. More than 100 classes and career exploration activities will be offered by 12 schools of study at Purdue. 4-H members must be 14 years old to attend. July 7-8: Farm Management Tour

The 1998 Indiana Farm Management Tour will be held on five farms in Howard and Tipton counties. The operations grow the traditional corn and soybeans, tomatoes, banana peppers and hogs but with unique methods of productions and associated entrepreneurial enterprises. July 7, Aug. 3, Aug. 7: Improving Access To Rural Churches

A series of workshops for churches interested in improving access for persons with disabilities will be held across Indiana. Topics to be covered include low-cost adaptive aids and solutions for overcoming both physical and attitudinal barriers. The sessions also cover outreach to people with disabilities. Registration is $25, which covers lunch, handouts and a Caregiver's Guide.

July 26-29: Top Farmer Crop Workshop

More than 35 farmers, landlords and researchers will give their take on leasing, equipment budgeting, crop management and people management. Sessions include land-grant university research in risk management software, crop disease prevention, fertilization, grain storage and precision farming. The workshop costs $199 for the first person and $75 for each additional person from the same farm. Enrollment is limited, and preregistration is required. Registration covers two meals, coffee breaks and the use of computer facilities.
