Science/math teachers to learn more about aviationWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Astronaut Janice Voss will be the featured speaker at an awards banquet Saturday, June 20, as part of the Great Lakes Region Aviation and Space Education Conference at Purdue University.The registration deadline for the awards banquet is Monday, June 15. Those attending the conference on Friday and Saturday, June 19-20, can register up until the day of the event. Both the awards banquet and the conference are sponsored by the Purdue-based Indiana Space Grant Consortium and the Great Lakes Region Civil Air Patrol. The interdisciplinary, hands-on, conference entitled "Yearning and Learning to Touch the Sky" is for K-12 educators, professors, administrators, youth group leaders, CAP aerospace education members, and anyone interested in discovering the power of aviation and space education as a motivational tool. Purdue Veterinary Anatomy Professor Ronald Hullinger will speak about his academic sponsorship of a middle-school student whose science experiment was conducted aboard a shuttle mission. More than two dozen breakout sessions will provide discussion of topics ranging from computer software flight simulation to developing aerospace curriculums for the classroom. The event will provide classroom materials and ideas for instructional activities for all grade levels. The conference also includes a choice of three tours. One group will tour the Indianapolis International Airport, with stops at the United Airlines Maintenance Center, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Weather Service station. Another group will tour the Purdue Airport, with stops at the Aerospace Sciences Lab, the School of Aviation Technology's simulators and airplanes, and the control tower. A third group will tour Imagination Station, Lafayette's science museum. The conference schedule is as follows: Friday, June 19 7:30 a.m. One-site registration - 2nd floor, Stewart Center 8:45 a.m. Speaker: Professor Ronald Hullinger 10:30 a.m. Group sessions 1 p.m. Choice of three tours (approximately 3 hours) Saturday, June 20 7:30 a.m. Continental breakfast (a chance to meet former astronaut Mark Brown in an informal setting) 10:30 a.m. Group sessions 7 p.m. Awards banquet with speaker: Astronaut Janice Voss West Faculty Lounge, Purdue Memorial Union The cost is $90 for conference attendees and an additional $15 to attend the Saturday evening awards banquet.
