JOURNALISTS: Here's an idea for a news story and a list of Purdue events during the next two weeks.

Financial aid disappointing? There are options

High-school graduates who applied for college financial aid in March are learning now just how much they will receive in student grants and loans. For some, the amounts are less than expected. Flora L. Williams, Purdue associate professor of consumer and family economics, says it's best for parents to plan long-term for college expenses. But if they haven't saved enough and have a child enrolling in college, Williams says there are immediate avenues for funds. She says parents might consider taking out a second mortgage or borrowing against their insurance policy. Other creative alternatives include purchasing a condo near campus and setting the child up as its rental agent.
