Purdue hires aquatics architects,
increases athletic ticket prices
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The Purdue University Board of Trustees today (Friday, 5/29) voted
to hire architects to plan a new $15 million aquatics center.
The board also approved increases in women's basketball and volleyball ticket prices.
The trustees agreed to hire Counsilman Hunsaker and Associates, of St. Louis, and
Scholer Corp., of Lafayette, as architects for the planned 62,000-square-foot aquatics
center. Counsilman Hunsaker will design everything related to the pool, and Scholer
will focus on the building and construction details, said Thomas Schmenk, director of
facilities planning and construction at Purdue.
The St. Louis firm has an excellent international reputation and also has designed
natatoriums and Olympic pools for Indianapolis and several universities, including
Georgia Tech, Minnesota, North Carolina and Arkansas, Schmenk said.
The new aquatics center is part of a $22 million project that is a cooperative venture
among Intercollegiate Athletics, the Department of Health, Kinesiology and Leisure
Studies, and the Division of Recreational Sports.
The aquatics center will connect via a corridor to Purdue's Recreational Gymnasium,
which will undergo about $7 million in renovation. The aquatics project will be funded
with donations, and already half of the money has been pledged by private donors.
Purdue will seek bonding authority from the Indiana General Assembly to pay for $5 million
of the work on the Recreational Gymnasium, and $2 million will be provided from accumulated
reserve for renewals.
The new aquatics center will be built behind the gymnasium on land that is currently
occupied by an outdoor pool and diving well, three tennis courts and two basketball
courts. The new center will replace the 40-year-old indoor and outdoor pools at the
recreational gym and the 60-year-old pool at Lambert Fieldhouse.
The plans call for a new Olympic-size pool with eight 50-meter lanes and a diving
well with two one-meter and two three-meter boards and a tower with three diving
platforms. The center will be home to the men's and women's swim teams and also will
be open to users and guests of the recreational gym.
According to Carol Stickel, director of the Division of Recreational Sports, planned
changes to the recreational gym include a 17,000-square-foot cardiovascular and fitness
training center on the basement level and a 5,800-square-foot aerobics studio in
the space currently occupied by the indoor pool.
Completion of the total project is expected by fall 2001.
The trustees also increased athletic ticket prices for single-game and season tickets
for Purdue women's basketball and volleyball games for the 1998-99 season.
A single-game ticket for basketball will increase $1 to $6 for the public and $3 for
students. Season tickets will cost the public $63, an increase of $3. Students will
pay $32, an increase of $8.
Volleyball single tickets also will increase $1 and cost $5 for the public and $3
for students. Season tickets will cost the public $53, an increase of $8. Students
will pay $32, an increase of $9.
Combined basketball and volleyball season tickets will cost the public $90, up $6.
Students will pay $50, an increase of $12.
The prices of season tickets are based on 13 games for basketball and 14 for volleyball.
Prices are subject to change if the number of home games changes before the start
of preseason ticket sales. Although the types of ticket packages offered were changed last year, the prices of single-game and season tickets have not changed for women's
basketball in five years and for volleyball in eight years.
