MAY 5-6: WORKSHOP ON JUVENILE VIOLENCE
AND GANGS

Identifying signs of juvenile volatility, how to educate communities on gang identifiers, and programs that assist in conflict resolution are topics to be covered at this Purdue Extension workshop at the Canyon Inn at McCormick's Creek State Park near Spencer. The workshop is for teams of police and probation officers, judges, teachers and others who want to learn more about reducing juvenile violence and gang influence in their communities. In response to comments from attendees, the organizers have added a session on school security. The first day runs from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The second day will start at 7 a.m. Registration is $50 and is limited to the first 125 people. MAY 6: AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH AWARD CEREMONY AND SEMINAR

The 1998 Agricultural Research Award will presented to Bernard Engel, professor of agricultural and biological engineering, at 2:30 p.m. May 6 in Room 116, Whistler Hall of Agricultural Research. Engel will present a seminar on applications of geographic information systems to agricultural nonpoint source pollution problems. A reception will follow the seminar. MAY 12: DEAN OF AGRICULTURE TEAM AWARD
AND SEMINAR

The 1998 Team Award will be presented to the International Sorghum and Millet Collaborative Research Support Team (INTSORMIL) at 1:30 p.m. May 12 in Room 116, Whistler Hall of Agricultural Research. INTSORMIL combined basic and applied sciences in crop breeding, physiological biochemistry, food processing and economics to improve sorghum for use in developing countries. MAY 19-21: MULTI-STATE POULTRY NUTRITION CONFERENCE

Feeding layer hens, feeding turkeys and feed milling management are among the topics to be covered at this conference at the Marriott Hotel in Indianapolis. BASF will host a technical symposium on the afternoon of May 20. The symposium will feature speakers on feed additives and poultry performance. There also will be a program on balancing nutrients in poultry manure. Registration is $20 for university and government personnel and $80 for industry personnel and is due by May 8. JUNE 10-12: 85th HOME AND FAMILY CONFERENCE

Naomi Griffith, a child welfare expert, and Betty Sinnock, founder and senior partner of the Beardstown Ladies Investment Club, are the featured speakers. Other sessions on the Purdue campus will deal with food safety, family issues and money matters. Registration is $33 for the whole conference or $23 for a single day. JUNE 10-12: 4-H WORKSHOPS

The state 4-H workshops will be held June 10-12 on the Purdue campus. These workshops allow youths to explore areas of interest in a university setting. Workshops will cover these topics: aerospace, ambassador, animal science, computer science, environmental conservation, food and nutrition, mechanical science, and plant science. JUNE 11: IN-FIELD DIAGNOSTIC TRAINING CLINIC

The Purdue Cooperative Extension Service is presenting a series of in-field diagnostic training clinics throughout the summer. The clinics are designed to improve farmers' troubleshooting skills and field crop management. Topics such as insect management, disease management and soil compaction management will be featured. The clinics are broken up into early, middle and late seasons to present specific and timely information and examples. Preregistration is required, and clinics are limited to 60 people. Registration is $90 at the West Lafayette location and $50 at the Columbia City location.

JUNE 25: PURDUE HAY DAY

This annual, one-day Purdue Cooperative Extension Service event at Prairie Heights School Farm off of U.S. 20 in Lagrange County will feature morning sessions on topics such as precision agriculture and balancing yield, quality and persistence in forage production. Lunch will be followed by a panel discussion on potato leafhopper-resistant alfalfa. Equipment demonstrations by more than 13 companies will be held in the afternoon. A hay quality contest will be held, and producers can have their hay and silage samples evaluated by Purdue specialists. The free field day is co-sponsored by the Indiana Forage Council.
