JOURNALISTS: Here's an idea for an upcoming news story and a list of newsworthy Purdue events during the next two weeks.
Purdue expert offers insight on Asian crisisA Purdue University economist who is one of President Clinton's senior economic advisers will meet with the new premier of China, Zhu Rongji, and other Chinese government representatives in early May. Jon D. Haveman, assistant professor of economics, will be part of a U.S. delegation traveling to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, April 30-May 10, in advance of Clinton's June trip to China. "We will be exchanging ideas on economic reform and responses to the Asian financial crisis," he says. Although Haveman predicts that the crisis will significantly slow the growth of international investment in Asian markets, "the U.S. contingent will applaud recent reforms and encourage continued market opening" in China, he says. Haveman is on a leave of absence from Purdue to serve a year as one of 10 senior staff economist on the Council of Economic Advisers.
