Purdue seniors earn leadership awards
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Seven Purdue University seniors received Charles O. McGaughey
Leadership Awards today (Friday, 4/17) during the University Honors Convocation.
Each student received an unrestricted cash award of $2,500. The recipients are Katherine
Dianne Gapinski, Georgetown, Ky.
; Clay Colvin Mingus, Winder, Ga.
; Melinda Monet Paine, West
Lafayette, Ind.
; Amy Elizabeth Roberts, Chattanooga, Tenn.
; Christopher Michael Scott, Indianapolis
; Camille Marie Smith, Fort Wayne, Ind.
; and Bridget Kathleen Williams, Greenwood, Ind.
McGaughey, a 1939 Purdue graduate from Indianapolis, established the award to honor
undergraduates who show leadership abilities and an appreciation of basic American
values through service to the community and the university. McGaughey co-founded
the Indiana-based MCL Cafeteria chain. He died in 1992. The first awards were presented in
1991.
Recipients must have completed at least two years of study at Purdue while maintaining
a B average and have an appreciation of the values of liberty, the democratic form
of government, and the importance of respect for others and for the diversity of
the United States.
Here are the details about the winners:
- Gapinski is majoring in psychology and creative writing. She has served as president
of Psi Chi and vice president of Golden Key and Gamma Sigma Alpha national honor
societies. She is a member of Mortar Board, Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi
national honor societies.
- Mingus is majoring in English and Spanish. He is president of Mortar Board and has
served as a senator and as president pro-tem in Purdue Student Government. He is
a mentor in the Mauzy Leadership Mentor Program and a member of Golden Key.
- Paine is majoring in elementary education. She is secretary of Kappa Delta Pi international
honor society and has been vice president of the Worldwide Discipleship Association
and an officer in the University Choir. She is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa national honor society.
- Roberts is majoring in biology. She has been president of the Science Student Council
and Science Forum and vice president of the Biology Club. She has been a mentor for
Women in Science and is a teaching assistant in the biology department. She is a
member of Golden Key and Mortar Board.
- Scott is majoring in pharmacy. He was student body president and is vice president
of Iron Key national honor society. He has served as executive director of issues
for Purdue Student Government and as a pre-pharmacy orientation chairman. He is a
member of Mortar Board and Phi Lambda Sigma national honor societies.
- Smith is majoring in psychology. She was president of the Purdue Cooperative Housing
Association, co-chairwoman for the Mortar Board Leadership Conference and a mentor
for the Mauzy Leadership Mentor program. She is a member of Iron Key, Phi Beta Kappa
and Mortar Board national honor societies.
- Williams is majoring in English education. She has been co-chairwoman for the Mortar
Board Leadership Conference, a member of the Old Masters Central Committee and a
student director for the Mauzy Leadership Mentor program. She also has been co-manager
of the University Choir and vice president of Women in Communication. She is a member
of Mortar Board.
