Faculty cited at honors convocation

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Outstanding teaching during the 1997-98 academic year at Purdue University was recognized Friday (4/17) at the University Honors Convocation.

The annual awards ceremony in Elliott Hall of Music honors outstanding faculty members universitywide and in each of the undergraduate schools. Additionally, all the university's Dean's List or Semester Honors students from the 1997 spring and fall semesters were recognized, as were winners of year-end student and staff awards.

Five faculty members received Purdue University Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Awards in Memory of Charles B. Murphy. Each $3,000 award -- the university's highest undergraduate teaching honor -- is given for exemplary teaching performance in all phases of undergraduate instruction on Purdue's West Lafayette campus.

The 1998 winners are:

  • Elizabeth Grauerholz, associate professor of sociology.

  • Robert Paul Lamb, associate professor of English.

  • Michael A. Morrison, associate professor of history.

  • Jason D. Papastavrou, associate professor of industrial engineering.

  • Ian P. Shipsey, associate professor of physics.

    Academic school teaching awards and the recipients are:

  • School of Agriculture Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award, R. Mack Strickland, associate professor of agricultural and biological engineering.

  • Mary L. Matthews Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching in the School of Consumer and Family Sciences, Richard F. Ghiselli, assistant professor of restaurant, hotel, institutional, and tourism management.

  • School of Education Outstanding Teacher Award, Marilyn A. Hirth, associate professor of educational studies.

  • A.A. Potter Best of Engineering Teachers Awards (Schools of Engineering), Dan D. Budny, associate professor of freshman engineering.

  • School of Health Sciences Award for Excellence in Teaching, Robert R. Landolt, professor of bionucleonics.

  • School of Liberal Arts Educational Excellence Awards, Grauerholz and William Joseph Palmer, professor of English.

  • School of Management Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher Award, J. Douglas Bowman, assistant professor of management.

  • Excellence in Teaching Award in the School of Nursing, Donna M. Kauffman, assistant head for student services and associate professor of nursing.

  • School of Pharmacy and Pharmacal Sciences Professor Henry W. Heine Award for Excellence in Teaching, Bruce A. Mueller, associate professor of clinical pharmacy.

  • School of Science Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award, Johnny E. Brown, professor of mathematics.

  • School of Technology James G. Dwyer Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching, James L. Mohler, assistant professor of technical graphics.

  • School of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Outstanding Teaching Award, Carlton H. Lamar, associate professor of veterinary anatomy.

Other faculty award recipients are:

  • Carol J. Dewey, compliance adviser, Intercollegiate Athletics, won the Helen B. Schleman Gold Medallion Award, which includes a $1,000 cash prize. The Schleman Award is for significant contributions to students at the university.

  • Ei-ichi Negishi, professor of chemistry, was named the 1998 winner of the $3,000 Herbert Newby McCoy Award for contributions to the field of science.

  • Muriel S. Harris, professor of English, won the Class of 1922 Helping Students Learn Award for her work in directing Purdue's Online Writing Lab. She received a $3,750 cash prize and her department will receive a $1,250 academic expense account for her use. At the Purdue Alumni Association's Founders Day Banquet on Saturday, April 25, she will receive the Helping Students Learn Award crystal trophy.
