New captains named in Purdue Police DepartmentWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Two veteran officers in the Purdue University Police Department, Steven R. Dietrich and Linda J. Stump, have been named captains of the Investigation Division and Patrol Division, respectively.The appointments were announced by William M. Coghill, director of Purdue Safety and Security and chief of police. "These positions have key administrative responsibility for our uniformed officers and our detectives, and they have an impact on our vital interaction with the people we serve," Coghill said. "As we reorganize these assignments, I am pleased to be able to rely on Steve Dietrich's significant experience in our department, and I know Linda Stump will provide strong leadership as she becomes our first female captain. I look forward to working closely with them both." Dietrich previously was captain of operations; Stump was a detective lieutenant. Dietrich, a West Lafayette native, graduated from West Lafayette High School and Purdue, earning a bachelor's degree in criminology. He joined the Purdue Police Department in 1984 and has served the department as a detective, detective sergeant and lieutenant, and captain of operations. He was an officer with the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department from 1982 to 1984 before joining the Purdue department. He also is coach of the West Lafayette High School varsity girls basketball team, which recently won the 1998 Class 3-A state championship. Stump, a Lafayette native, graduated from Jefferson High School, then earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and corrections from Ball State University. She has attended both the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and the FBI National Academy, and completed her master's degree in higher education administration at Purdue in December. She was an Indiana State Trooper for a year before joining Purdue police in 1985, and she has been a patrol officer, detective sergeant and detective lieutenant. She is a member of Purdue's Task Force on Women's Issues, Partners in Prevention, the Purdue sexual assault prevention program, and the Tippecanoe County Domestic Violence Task Force.
