Police seeking new leads in missing-student caseWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- As the Purdue University Police Department continues its investigation into the disappearance of a student more than two weeks ago, persons with any new information or leads on the case are asked to contact the department. The missing student is John C. Leath, 19, a freshman in engineering from Wilmette, Ill., who resides in Room 105, Northeast Cary Quadrangle. Leath is white, with short blond hair and blue eyes. He is 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighs about 175 pounds. When last seen on March 19, he was believed to be wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. "We are continuing a wide-ranging investigation, but, to date, none of our leads has shed any light on the mystery of his whereabouts," said Purdue police Capt. Steven R. Dietrich. "It is vitally important that persons with any information regarding John Leath contact us." Dietrich said investigators have learned that Leath was at Vierk Surplus Store Exchange in Lafayette on March 19 and bought a shotgun. He also had been in Florida during Purdue's spring break, the week of March 9, and had told friends he enjoyed his time there and wished to return sometime. Purdue police were first informed of Leath's disappearance on the evening of March 23, when the student's father called to report that his son had not been seen in his Cary Quadrangle Residence Hall since the week before. The father had been contacted by the son's friends earlier that evening. The Purdue Police Department telephone number is (765) 494-8221.
