Gala Week festivities in place for Purdue alumniWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue Alumni Association has planned reunions, entertainment and activities for alumni "Cruisin' Home to Purdue" for the university's Gala Week, April 24-26.Registration and activities information will be available at Gala Week headquarters in Room 118, Purdue Memorial Union. The Gala Week office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 24 and 25. For registration and ticket information, call the headquarters office at (765) 494-5175. The class parade to John Purdue's grave will step off at 10:45 a.m. Saturday, April 25, from the area between the Purdue Memorial Union and Stewart Center. The parade is traditionally led by the oldest attending alumni. Other parade participants will include the Purdue "All-American" Marching Band, Purdue Pete and the Boilermaker Special. The 41st Purdue Grand Prix is scheduled to start about 1:15 p.m. Saturday, April 25, on the kart track north of Ross-Ade Stadium. Two former winners of the 50-mile kart race, Joe Troyer of Kokomo, a senior in the School of Agriculture, and Dustin Smith of Frankfort, a junior in the School of Management, are among the drivers registered for the 1998 Grand Prix. The Grand Prix Carnival, featuring Poor Jack's Amusements, will be open on the stadium parking lot from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, April 22 and 23; 5:30 p.m. to midnight Friday, April 24; and 11 a.m. to midnight Saturday, April 25. Race-day events require admission to the track. Tickets are $5 in advance and $6 at the gate. For more information, contact the Purdue Grand Prix Foundation, (765) 494-2708. The Visitor Information Center, 504 Northwestern Ave., will provide guided tours of campus at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday, April 24, and at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 25. Reservations are required; call (765) 494-INFO. The Alumni Association will sponsor the third annual Gala Week Lecture Series on Saturday, April 25. Three sessions are scheduled in Room 206, Stewart Center: Tony Hawkins, interim vice president for student services, at 2 p.m.; Kevin Dittman, assistant professor of computer technology, at 2:45 p.m.; and Jim Scott, golf course superintendent, at 3:30 p.m. Pi Tau Sigma, an honor society for students in mechanical engineering, will sponsor several events as part of its 75th anniversary. An overview of the Engineering Projects in Community Service program will be presented at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 24, in Room 311 Stewart Center. EPICS is a program designed to let students apply their technical skills to practical problems faced by local community service agencies. At 3 p.m. April 24, faculty members will present "Graduate Research -- Advancing Technology for the 21st Century," in Room 311, Stewart Center. The society will review the organization's history at noon Saturday, April 25, in the Mechanical Engineering Building courtyard. A luncheon for students, faculty and alumni will follow the presentation. Many schools have scheduled activities for alumni between 7:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Saturday, April 25. Contact each school for more information. Also, various class reunions and coffer hours have been scheduled for Sunday, April 26.
