Australian Chamber Orchestra closes Classical Music SeriesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Australian Chamber Orchestra with cellist Steven Isserlis will take the stage of Purdue University's Loeb Playhouse at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 2. The concert is presented by Purdue Convocations with support from Lafayette Savings Bank and is the last event of the 1997-98 Loeb Music Collection.According to the Washington Post, the Australian Chamber Orchestra is "one of the world's finest small orchestras." Back by popular demand after a successful show two years ago, the orchestra consists of a core group of 17 string players led by violinist Richard Tognetti. Since becoming artistic director and leader of the Australian Chamber Orchestra in 1989, Tognetti has guided it on 14 international tours covering 18 countries. The group has twice won Australian Record Industry Awards for its recordings. Isserlis, who joins the Australian Chamber Orchestra at Purdue, possesses "a radiant tone, superb technical skills, and an imaginative interpretive gift that results in deeply profound performances," according to The Seattle Times. He was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Instrumentalist of the Year Award in 1993 and appears regularly with many of the world's premier large orchestras.
