Purdue comptroller named vice president for business servicesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University's comptroller, James S. Almond, has been selected to become its next vice president for business services and assistant treasurer, President Steven C. Beering announced today (Monday, 3/16).Almond will take the position being vacated by Kenneth P. Burns, who will step up to executive vice president and treasurer in July when Frederick R. Ford retires. As vice president for business services and assistant treasurer, Almond will be responsible to Burns for the comptroller area, budgeting and fiscal planning, oversight of school and departmental business affairs, administration of contracts and grant business affairs, personnel services, and procurement. His appointment as assistant treasurer requires ratification by the Board of Trustees, which will meet March 27. "Jim Almond has done an excellent job as comptroller and offers not only exceptional experience in key business service areas, but also an understanding of Purdue's high standards for fiscal integrity," Beering said. "I am confident he will maintain Purdue's reputation as a national leader in business operations." Burns commented: "Jim has a tremendous work ethic, an ability to prioritize tasks, and outstanding leadership ability. I believe he will be a very strong member of our administrative team." Almond joined Purdue in 1983 as a project administrator in the Office of Contract and Grant Business Affairs. He held managerial roles in Accounting Services and the Department of Personnel Services before becoming assistant director of investments in 1992, assistant comptroller in 1995 and comptroller a year later. As comptroller, he has been responsible for directing Purdue's collection, disbursement and accounting functions and has served as part of the university's budget team. He also has participated in the internal investment committee. Major sections within the comptroller's area include accounting services, collections, costing, disbursements, risk management, and the business offices of housing and food services as well as physical facilities. Almond, a native of Fort Wayne, Ind. , received his bachelor's and master's of business administration degrees from Indiana University in 1983 and 1987.
