MARCH 10-APRIL 7: ESTATE, BUSINESS TRANSFER PLANNING SEMINARS
This two-part seminar by Gerald Harrison, Purdue Cooperative Extension Service economist and professor of agricultural economics, is for farm families, small business owners, landowners and professionals assisting with estate and business transfers. The first part features an explanation of the new federal gift, estate and income tax law. The second part discusses special features, considerations and tools for transfer of a family business. MARCH 11-12: TRI-STATE VEGETABLE GROWERS SCHOOL
This conference at the University Center in New Albany, Ind., focuses on growing melons, pumpkins and peppers. Sessions will deal with marketing skills, choosing crop varieties, insect and disease management, and irrigation. Registration is $50 for the March 11 melon growers sessions, $30 for the March 12 half-day pumpkin growers sessions, and $30 for the March 12 half-day pepper growers sessions. MARCH 13-15: THE 1998 INDIANA GRAPE WINE SYMPOSIUM
This conference at the Convention Center in Bloomington, Ind., opens with a Friday night wine tasting. Saturday workshops begin at 8:30 a.m., and the day ends with a dinner at 7:30 p.m. Purdue workshops on enology, viticulture and marketing are scheduled at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Sponsored by The Indiana Winegrowers Guild, The Indiana Wine Grape Council and Purdue University. Registration is $45 for members of the grape council, $55 for nonmembers. MARCH 17-19: MANURE MANAGEMENT WORKSHOPS
Livestock waste handling specialists from the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service and Indiana Department of Environmental Management agricultural liaison Brian Daggy are holding a series of free workshops around Indiana to help livestock producers comply with the new state requirements for manure management. Topics include a regulations update, soil and manure sampling, new IDEM inspection procedures, and on-farm record keeping of manure disposal. MARCH 21: PURDUE JUNIOR PORK DAY
The Purdue Junior Pork Day is designed by the Animal Science and 4-H departments to assist younger 4-H members with their swine project. Evaluating swine, a judging contest, how to keep your pig healthy, and pig jeopardy are just a few of the sessions to be offered. Lunch will be sponsored by Armour Swift-Eckrich. Registration is $2 and can done at 8 a.m. in the lobby of Lilly Hall. MARCH 21: SPRING FEVER BEEKEEPING WORKSHOP
Morning sessions in Room 202, Stewart Center, will include basic colony management, raising superior queens, and research about mites. After lunch, the workshop will move to the Purdue Bee Lab for demonstrations on grafting larva into queen cups, construction of equipment and honey extraction. Registration is $10 at the door. MARCH 26-27: RURAL CAREGIVERS WORKSHOP
This workshop is sponsored by Purdue's Breaking New Ground Resource Center, which assists people in agriculture who have disabilities. A half-day training session March 26 will be for the professional caregiver who works in rural areas. Family caregivers will be the focus of a full-day of session March 27. Cost is $105 for the first day and $60 for the second day. Preregistration is required by March 20. To register, call (800) 825-4264. MARCH 28: BARN AGAIN IN INDIANA
This workshop on barn renovation will be at the Fulton County Historical Society in Rochester, Ind. Sessions will cover history and structural technology as well as economic incentives for restoration and property tax issues. Sources of know-how, labor and materials will be shared by barn renovators. The workshop, co-sponsored by the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service, costs $25 per person or $15 per person if two people want to share an informational packet. APRIL 3-4: INDIANA, KENTUCKY BEEKEEPING ASSOCIATION MEETINGS
This Friday afternoon and all-day Saturday meeting will be held at Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Ky. Topics to be covered include hygienic bee research, spring beekeeping basics, a self-guided quiz on beekeeping, and a Kentucky folk/bluegrass concert. Registration is $5 at the door.
