JOURNALISTS: Here are details about some Purdue events during the next two weeks.

These Olympians get their kicks from science

Students from 15 schools will compete Saturday, Feb. 28, in the Purdue Regional Tournament of the Science Olympiad. Among the 43 contests during the day will be:

Naked Egg Drop. 1:30 p.m. Location yet to be determined. Students will attempt to drop an egg to the floor without breaking it.

Bottle Rocket Contest. 11 a.m. Memorial Mall. Students will launch rockets made of plastic liter bottles. The rocket with the most air time wins.

Bridge Building. 8:30 a.m. Room 2125 Brown Laboratory of Chemistry. Participants will suspend as much weight as possible from their bridges.

Students will come from eight high schools -- Attica, Carmel, LaPorte, Marian Mishawaka, McCutcheon, North Central Indianapolis, South Vermillion and Tri-County -- and seven junior high schools -- Brownsburg, Carmel, Southwestern, Wainwright, Zionsville, Winamac and Attica. Winners advance to the state finals March 28 at Indiana University. The awards ceremony for the Purdue contest will be from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. in Room 200, Wetherill Laboratory of Chemistry. During the day, information about specific contests will be available in Room 221, Wetherill. Tuesday, Feb. 24.
Reception and book signing. 4 p.m. Anniversary Drawing Room, Purdue Memorial Union. The authors are Lisa Anderson and Tracy Sharpley-Whiting, assistant professors of African-American Studies. Anderson is the author of "Mammies No More: The Changing Image of Black Women on Stage and Screen." Sharpley-Whiting wrote "Spoils of War: Women of Color, Cultures and Revolution" and "Franz Fannon: Conflicts and Feminisms." A Black History Month event. Thursday-Friday, Feb. 26-27.
Failed States and International Security: Causes, Prospects and Consequences. 9 a.m.-5:15 p.m. both days. All sessions in Room 310, Stewart Center. A conference on the increasing number of "failed states." These countries threaten regional security and often result in demands for U.S. and international intervention. Nine international experts will address the issue and offer proposals for lessening the crisis. Interviews with the participants may be conducted by phone before the conference. Friday, Feb. 27.
Where Does the Securities Industry Go From Here -- Boom or Bust? 11:30 a.m. Krannert Auditorium, Krannert Building. Speaker: James C. Redinger, senior managing director, McDonald & Co. Securities Inc., Cleveland. Part of the Krannert Executive Forum. Reporters are welcome, but are asked to refrain from asking questions during the lecture. Videotaping and taking photographs are not allowed during the formal part of the lecture, but are allowed during the student question-and-answer sessions. Saturday, Feb. 28.
Math Counts regional competition. 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Fowler Hall, Stewart Center. Aims to foster interest and competency in mathematics in seventh- and eighth-grade students. Schools attending are: Seeger High School, Roosevelt High School, Tuttle Middle School, West Lafayette High School, Klondike Middle School, East Tippecanoe Middle School and Frankfort Middle School. Saturday, Feb. 28.
Finals of Purdue's 11th annual Burton D. Morgan Entrepreneurial Competition. 9 a.m. Krannert Building auditorium. Ten teams of students will compete for a total purse of $8,000, with a $4,000 first prize. The competition will consist of business plan presentations and prototype demonstrations by the teams for a panel of judges. Prizes will be awarded at an evening banquet.
