Purdue, IDEM hold manure management workshops

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Livestock waste handling specialists from the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service are holding a series of workshops around Indiana to help livestock producers comply with the new state requirements for manure management.

Intended for any livestock producers who hold IDEM confined feeding permits, the meetings are run by Extension specialists Alan Sutton and Don Jones and Indiana Department of Environmental Management agricultural liaison Brian Daggy. Topics include a regulations update, soil and manure sampling, new IDEM inspection procedures, and on-farm record keeping of manure disposal. Participants also will fill out a manure management plan for their operations.

Jones said livestock producers at similar workshops at the Indiana Pork Producers annual conference were positive about the new requirements: "It's a good law. The IDEM inspections will help producers protect the environment, and the manure management could save producers money."

The workshops are free. For specific times and locations (some of which are intended to serve producers in multiple counties), contact the appropriate Extension educators. The schedule:
