Jan. 13-16: Certified Crop adviser Workshop

This workshop will include sessions on disease, insect, weed and herbicide management. All sessions are open to the public, but they will be especially helpful for those preparing for the Certified Crop Adviser exam in February. Registration fee is $400, plus a $6 parking fee for visitors not staying at the Union Club Hotel. The fee includes all lunches during workshop days. Jan. 21-23: Purdue Ag Forum

The annual forum invites Indiana business leaders, professors and policymakers to attend sessions focusing on agriculture, education, technology and economics. The three-day event is titled "A 2020 Vision of Rural Indiana." Daytime sessions for the Ag Forum cost $15 for one day or $25 for two days, and preregistration through Purdue's Continuing Education Department is encouraged. Evening events are free. • JAN. 21: Events begin with a general session on rural economic change in Indiana, population migration and demographics, roads and the changing characteristics of rural Indiana families. An afternoon session includes a panel discussion by Indiana leaders about the vision for their communities in the year 2020. Later that evening, Ag Forum participants can watch the Purdue-Ohio State basketball game on a big screen TV.
  
• JAN. 22: The Ag Forum continues with a question-and-answer session with Lt. Gov. Joe Kernan before the sessions begin. An agriculture session will cover farming demographics; rural opportunities; labor issues; the changing structure and size of farms; the global marketplace; and environmental issues. Victor Lechtenberg, dean of the Purdue School of Agriculture, will close with a discussion on "What Must Indiana Do to Compete in the 21st Century?" A technology session will give the audience a look at how business and education technology will work in Indiana's economic future. A session on education focuses on the roles of educators in helping rural Indiana progress during the next 25 years. A panel of experts in this session will discus the future of learning technologies. The next session, titled "The Changing Indiana Family," will look at the state of child care and health care. An evening session, which begins at 7, includes an outlook panel sponsored by WILL-580 Radio. Panelists are Charles Lindy, WILL farm director and panel moderator; Paul Bates, Bates Commodities; Wayne Nelson, L&M Commodities; Bob Utterback, Utterback Marketing Services; and Chris Hurt, Purdue agricultural economist. After the session, Thomas Jackson of the AgMas Project will discuss the project's findings in a study that compares pricing performance of 25 ag marketing services. Hurt will speak on "Using Indiana Grain Price Patterns for Market Timing." This session is free.
  
• JAN. 23: "AG FORECAST" A panel of industry leaders will debate the future of agriculture. Panelists include Victor Lechtenberg, dean of Purdue's School of Agriculture; Charles S. Johnson, president and CEO of Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc.; William F. Kirk, senior vice president and general manager of DuPont Agricultural Products; Harry Cleberg, president and CEO of Farmland Industries Inc.; Dean R. Kleckner, president of American Farm Bureau Federation; and John Hagaman, president and CEO of Dow AgroSciences. Orion Samuelson of Channel Earth will moderate. The session begins at 9 a.m. in Loeb Theater of Stewart Center and will be broadcast live on Channel Earth. Jan. 23: Ag Fish Fry

The annual Ag Fish Fry begins at 11:30 a.m. with the theme, "We're Off ... To See The Wizard," with Fish-Fry variations on the characters from "The Wizard of Oz." Entertainment will be provided by the Purdue Pep Band and Purdue Musical Organizations. Certificates of Distinction will be awarded to honorees selected for their service to agriculture. Fish Fry tickets are $12 each and available only in advance at all Purdue Cooperative Extension Service county offices in Indiana or through the Ag Alumni Association office, (765) 494-8593. Group discounts are offered for parties of 10 or more.

Jan. 26-30: Crop Management Workshops

The Purdue Pest Management Program will hold a series of Crop Management Workshops at five locations throughout Indiana. Participants will discuss topics such as insect and insecticide considerations, a review and update of pesticide regulations, variable corn establishment and grain production, and pest and nutrient management planning. Registration is $40 per person, and preregistration is encouraged. The fee does not include lunch. The workshops will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on these days:

Jan. 27-28: Indiana Horticultural congress

The congress includes two days of educational sessions devoted to growers interested in commercial fruit, vegetables and specialty crops. There also will be a trade show. The congress will be at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Indianapolis. Registration is $25 for members of groups sponsoring the congress, and $35 for nonmembers. Registration must be completed by Jan. 15.
