Police investigating computer child pornography case

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University police are investigating a case involving files of child pornography found in a university-owned computer. An arrest may be pending.

Police obtained a search warrant today (Friday, 11/21) through the Tippecanoe County prosecutor's office.

It's alleged that images of child pornography were downloaded from the Internet, said Purdue police Capt. Steven R. Dietrich. Possession of child pornography is a Class A misdemeanor. If the material is shared or distributed, it becomes a Class C felony. He said a Class A misdemeanor carries up to a one-year prison term and up to a $5,000 fine. A Class C felony carries up to an eight-year prison term and up to a $10,000 fine.

Dietrich said that during a routine computer back-up, it was discovered that numerous files had titles that appeared to be related to incest or child pornography, which led Purdue police to obtain the search warrant.

Police are continuing their investigation with the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Dietrich said police are withholding the name of a possible suspect and other details while the investigation continues.
