Award-winning violinist to perform Dec. 11

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Elmar Oliveira, the first American violinist to capture the coveted Tchaikovsky Competition Gold Medal, will give one concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, in Loeb Playhouse in Purdue University's Stewart Center. The concert is part of the Loeb Music series and is presented by Purdue Convocations with support from Friends of Convocations.

Oliveira has been hailed by The New York Times as a "major artist in the very top international echelon." He was the first violinist to be awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Prize and is a two-time Grammy nominee. Oliveira has performed worldwide in recital and as soloist with numerous groups, including the San Francisco, American and London symphony orchestras and the New York, Los Angeles and London philharmonics. Oliveira is professor of violin at Purchase College Conservatory of Music in New York.
