JOURNALISTS: Here's a story idea and Purdue events during the next two weeks.
To avoid smoking, turn down drinks, too
Thursday, Nov. 20, is the Great American Smokeout sponsored by the American Cancer
Society. Smokers who want to abstain from smoking that day might want to avoid going
to bars as well, suggests a Purdue researcher. Stephen Tiffany, professor of psychological sciences, says alcohol increases the urge to smoke. Tiffany, who researches nicotine
craving, says other cues that increase the desire for a cigarette include watching
other people smoke and doing activities during which one normally smokes, such as
talking on the phone. He says stress, anger , anxiety or depression also can contribute
to the urge to reach for a cigarette. CONTACT: Tiffany, (765) 494-8509; e-mail, tiffany@psych.purdue.edu
