NOV. 19: INCOME TAX MANAGEMENT FOR FARMERS
Indiana farmers and others will have an opportunity to learn what the Taxpayers' Relief Act of 1997 means for them during this free closed-circuit television discussion from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Purdue Cooperative Extension Service will present the discussion of the new law on the Indiana Higher Education Telecommunications System. DEC. 1-4 and JAN. 13-16: CERTIFIED CROP ADVISOR WORKSHOP
The December workshop will instruct participants on basic soils, soil fertility, and water management for crops and soil. The January workshop will include sessions on disease, insect, weed and herbicide management. All sessions are open to the public, but will be helpful for those preparing for the Certified Crop Advisor exam in February. Each four-day session will be held at Purdue University's Stewart Center. Registration for each workshop is $400, plus a $6 parking fee for visitors not staying at the Union Club Hotel. The fee includes all lunches during workshop days. DEC. 2: TRI-STATE FARM VALUE-ADDED GRAIN SEMINAR
This seminar at the Vanderburgh County 4-H Center is open to farmers in the Indiana-Illinois-Kentucky area interested in specialty grains. Visitors can listen to speakers on topics such as "The Future of Specialty Grains in the Tri-State Region," "Biotechnology in the Seed Business" and "Farmer and End User Relationships." The sessions run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., CST (11 a.m.-4 p.m. EST). A panel of specialty grain buyers from the Tri-State area will hold a discussion on specialty grains at 10:30 a.m. CST. Farmers who bring in a whole grain sample can have it analyzed for moisture, protein, oil, starch, fiber and stress cracks by Purdue's NIRT Grain Analyzer Unit. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. CST. There is no cost for registration. A pork chop lunch will be served at no charge, but visitors must make reservations with a local Cooperative Extension Service office. DEC. 5: ALTERNATIVE HOG PRODUCTION STRATEGIES CONFERENCE
Hog producers will have an opportunity to learn about production systems that feature low investment and low production costs, as well as alternative marketing strategies. The presentation on production systems will include information on hooped structures, farrow-to-finish on pasture, deep-bedded Swedish systems, pasture farrowing and more. Farmers and a representative of Indiana Family Farms will present information on alternative marketing strategies. The conference will be from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Judi's Catering, 101 Plaza Lane., Lafayette. Participants must pay a $35 registration fee. JAN. 3: HOOSIER SHEEP INDUSTRY SYMPOSIUM YOUTH SESSION
Indiana 4-H'ers from elementary school age and up can learn the basics of showing sheep at the symposium, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Quality Inn East, 3525 N. Shadeland Ave., Indianapolis. Speakers will instruct participants on selecting sheep, feeding and health, and grooming and showing. A pizza party, swim party, trade show and exhibit area are included in the day's activities.
