Technology fee increased to $16 per semester

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue trustees today (Friday, 11/6) approved a technology fee of $16 per semester for full-time students on the West Lafayette campus.

The new fee takes effect in the spring semester, which begins in January.

Students first were assessed a technology fee this year -- $8 for the fall semester. Part-time students will continue to pay $8 a semester.

The money is being used to equip computer laboratories and provide access to campus computer networks, information and data bases. Technology fee funds also will be used to equip classrooms with computer and video projection equipment.

Purdue is the seventh Big Ten university to charge a technology fee. Of those charging a fee for technology and computer use, the $32 annual total for Purdue is lowest among Big Ten schools. Four universities, including Indiana and Ohio State, charge $200 or more per year.

"In order to maintain the world-class quality of a Purdue education, we constantly strive to equip our classrooms and laboratories with computer equipment and technology that will prepare our students for their rewarding careers," says Frederick Ford, executive vice president and treasurer. "The modest technology fee along with other budgeted funds allows us to keep pace with our peer institutions."

Regional campuses also charge a technology fee, based on number of credit hours taken. The action by the trustees does not affect technology fees charged at Purdue Calumet, North Central and Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.
