WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The 1997 Purdue University Christmas Show has not even hit the stage, yet already the 1998 show has received honors. The American Bus Association has named the Purdue Musical Organizations' annual event as one of the Top 100 events in North America for 1998.
The 1998 list includes events from all 50 states and the 11 Canadian provinces. The Christmas Show is one of two events from Indiana on the list. The Eiteljorg Museum's Annual Indian Market in Indianapolis, June 20-21, also was selected.
"It's so gratifying to be honored by such a well-respected, national organization for what we believe is the best Christmas show in the country," said Brian Breed, director of Purdue Musical Organizations and the Varsity Glee Club.
"It is even more appropriate for us to receive this recognition for the 1998 season because we will be celebrating the 65th anniversary of the Christmas Show and involving many of our alumni in the production. We've developed a large and loyal audience over the years, and we hope this opens our doors to many more fans from across the country."
The show features the student members of the five PMO ensembles: the Varsity Glee Club, Purduettes, University Choir, PMO Express and Purdue Bell Choir. Capacity crowds fill the 6,000-seat Elliott Hall of Music for six performances.
In 1982, the American Bus Association, the trade organization of the motorcoach industry, first published the list primarily to give group tour organizers a reference for preparing itineraries. The program's appeal has expanded since then, attracting worldwide attention from tour planners and the public.
Tickets are still available for the six 1997 performances: Friday, Dec. 12, at 8 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 13, at noon, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 14, at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Tickets prices are $16 for adults; $14 for Purdue students and $12 for high-school students or younger. For tickets, contact the Purdue box offices, (765) 494-3933, or Purdue Musical Organizations at (765) 494-3941 or 1-800-893-3041.
