'Chemistry of fire' is hot topic for Oct. 25 show

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University's Department of Chemistry aims to spark interest in the science behind fire and fireworks during two chemistry shows Saturday, Oct. 25, on the Purdue campus.

The one-hour shows, called "Chemistry of Fire," will begin at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in Room 200 of Wetherill Laboratory of Chemistry, located directly north of Stewart Center.

During each program, demonstrators will discuss the chemistry of combustion and show how fires can actually burn under water. In addition, the shows will include presentations of a syringe of liquid flames, multiple flame colors, and flames that show a strobe effect.

Displays of fireworks materials also will be presented, along with explanations of why things explode, said Paul Smith, director of lecture demonstrations for the Department of Chemistry.

The demonstrations are aimed at children and adults of all ages and are open to the public free of charge.
