Alumni will flood to Purdue for Homecoming '97
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Organizers are putting the final touches on Purdue University's
homecoming weekend activities Oct. 17-19.
The weekend includes breakfasts and brunches, receptions and open houses, lunches
and tailgate parties, all revolving around the football game against Big Ten rival
Wisconsin.
Some special events this year are:
- The restored clockworks from the old Heavilon Hall Tower will be dedicated at 4 p.m.
Friday, Oct. 17, in the atrium of the Materials and Electrical Engineering Building.
The clockworks will be put on permanent public display, 41 years after being saved
from the old tower upon its demolition.
- The new hardwood in Mackey Arena will get a workout from Purdue's men's and women's
basketball teams during Mackey Magic from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17. The
public is welcome when the teams take the floor after midnight for their first official
day of practice. Entertainment includes a light show, the presentation of the women's
Big Ten Championship rings and banner, and scrimmages by both teams. Doors will open
at 10:30 p.m. It's free.
- Tens of thousands of students, staff and guests have crossed the unique front porch
of the Virginia C. Meredith Residence Hall. This year marks 45 years of students
living in what is also known as the "X" hall. The anniversary celebration begins
at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, with a pregame reception and open house for all Meredith alumni.
Special alumni gifts will be presented.
- Tickets are still available for the Purdue vs. Wisconsin football game in Ross-Ade
Stadium. Kickoff time is subject to change, depending on the television schedule,
on Saturday, Oct. 18. Tickets are $24 for the public, $12 in South End Zone, $14
for students. Call 1-800-49-SPORT or (765) 494-3194. Pregame activities include an introduction
of the 25th Anniversary Football Team, coaches, managers, cheerleaders, and Homecoming
Queen. Halftime will include the crowning of the 1997 Homecoming Queen and a performance by Purdue's "All-American" Marching Band. More than 300 "All-American" Marching
Band alumni will join the band during halftime festivities.
- Share an evening in song and celebration with Purdue Musical Organizations, the PMO
Club and the Purdue Alumni Association at the Oktoberfest Banquet and Homecoming
Celebration 1997. The reception starts at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, in the Purdue
Memorial Union's Great Hall, followed by dinner in the Purdue Memorial Union Ballrooms
at 6 p.m. Reservations are required; call 1-800-893-3041 or (765) 494-3945. Availability
