Musical brings colorful twist to biblical story

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The biblical story of Joseph is brought to life in the Broadway musical "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," appearing for one show at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, in Purdue University's Elliott Hall of Music.

The performance is part the Lively Arts series, presented by Purdue Convocations with support from Cox Communications and Eli Lilly & Co.

"Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" tells the story of favorite son Joseph, who is sold into slavery by his 11 jealous brothers when their father, Jacob, gives him a fabulous coat of many colors. He is resold to the wealthy Potiphar, whose wife fails to seduce Joseph and has him thrown in jail.

Because of Joseph's power to interpret dreams -- and to predict Egypt's seven fat years and seven lean years -- he becomes the Pharaoh's right hand man. At the conclusion of this kaleidoscope of song and dance, Joseph reunites with his family and forgives his brothers.

Written by the famous team of Andrew Lloyd Webber (composer) and Tim Rice (lyricist), "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" was their first musical to be produced. They went on to create "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita."

Tickets are $30, $23 and $18 for the public, $18 and $14 for Purdue students, and $7 and $5 for Family Circle seating (second balcony) at campus box offices. Charge by phone at (765) 494-3933 or 1-800-914-SHOW.
